Drug rehab, local rehab and environment
If you are close to or connected with someone with a drug problem or alcohol abuse issues they will tell you that they want to get help and change. But how long does this last? A few days or a week maybe, then its back to the old habit again. It’s not because these people are bad or don’t listen or don’t want to change.
In most cases it’s simply a matter of how far has this drug problem gotten, how long has this person been abusing alcohol or taking drugs. The time using any mind altering substance will have an effect on that person’s ability to overcome this condition, not to mention the physical consequences of staying off drugs or alcohol when one has been using for some time.
So you may have decided, enough is enough and got hold of a local drug addiction counselor and together worked to convince this person to act and seek help. Finally after many attempts and insistence this close friend, family member, wife, daughter or son checks himself into a drug rehab facility. You now have peace of mind and can relax a bit.
One month later he is released and doing well for the first week or two, then you notice similar behavior returning; not taking calls, late for appointments, less shaven, looks a bit tired, etc. All indicators of the addiction cycle returning. One of the ingredients for unsuccessful drug rehab treatment is: using local rehab facilities. This happens throughout Canada no matter what province you are in.
Many people do not realize this but if you check into a local rehab facility chances are you will meet a drug buddy or dealer or simply make new contact through common acquaintance. Another point to keep in mind with regards to local drug rehab centers is the area is likely to be quite re-stimulating. Familiar area, people and things can trigger cravings and cause relapse. Just looking out a local rehab dorm window and seeing the familiar skyline can trigger the need to use again.
One of the oldest well known treatments for many ailments is: “change of environment”. This has been in practice for such a long time that it has become common practice with family doctors to tell their patients; “take some time off, go down south for a week or two”. And in each case this did have a positive impact.
So if you want the best results from your treatment program, consider doing it away from your local town or city. This step in recovery cannot be omitted if there is any chance at living a full and complete drug free life.
