Over the years, we have received thousands of calls, and many of these are from parents, spouses, and pretty much anyone seeking to help another who is struggling to overcome their addiction. Drugs and alcohol are quite common in our present society, and there are many reasons for this, but this is not the purpose of this article. This article is intended to assist someone who cannot get help from other resources. It should be understood from the start that the information below is advice and cannot be interpreted as a professional or medical diagnosis. Home Detox Solution
You can’t afford a private drug rehab? The addiction treatment is too far away? Or you cannot wait for a bed to become available yet still wish to stop using illicit drugs, prescription drugs, or alcohol? Well, this may be of help to you. The first thing to know about drugs and alcohol is that these substances are poisons. The body does not naturally produce these. But when these drugs are taken, the body’s first reaction is to fight the foreign substance from damaging its internal structure. Just as a common cold is a foreign virus and is fought back by the body, so does the body with drugs and alcohol.
Depleted Immune System
The degree of use determines the amount of fight back and resulting “depletion” of immune composition. This is why drug addicts and alcoholics appear so unhealthy; they have depleted all the body nutrients and are now prone to illness, disease, various infections, and depression.
A simple solution that can be done by any well-determined person who wishes to help another out of a bad situation is the following actions that can bring them back to health.
a. As feasible, get the person away from the area of substance abuse.
b. Begin nutritional intake period; this is an immediate intake of vitamins and minerals to rebuild the lost nutrients in the body’s natural structure. Get the best and highest dosage of Multivitamins you can find from a health food store. You can double the dosage for the first 3 days at least, always depending on the substance abuse level ex: if it says 2 per day, you take 4 or one every 6 hours, and it can even be 2 every 8 hours, what the body doesn’t use, it will simply release through urine.
c. Minerals include; a Multi-mineral at least once a day. Also, extra Calcium and Magnesium which is vital for muscle, nerve, and bone strength. This can be bought as a powder to make a drink called CAL-MAG. Check with your health food supplier, one product is called Calmax and can be purchased in different flavors, and it works well.
d. Epson salt baths to help ease the effects of withdrawal. This will help calm, relax and generally bring some relief to the person. Just have them take a bath with the salt in it per instructions.
e. Avoid long-drawn-out conversations requiring the person to think or wonder about their situation – this action comes much later when no more drugs are running through the body. The person feels better physically and mentally.
f. Extrovert (have the person’s attention outward things and not on self) the person with many short walks (when possible) have them look at objects far and close. This action alone will bring the persons attention off their situation and outward toward the world around them as it exists now. Indoors you can do it also by telling the person to “look at _____ (different objects in the room) over and over until they show signs of feeling a bit better. If able to walk, this can be switched up with “touch that ____ (different objects) it gives the same result – attention off self and outward.
g. All the actions above are done constantly every day, day after day after day – at least for the first 4 to 5 days. Of course, this depends on the drug being withdrawn from.
h. Heavy opiate users such as prescription medications and alcohol drinkers should consult a professional addictions counselor or physician, as a sudden stop of opiates and/or alcohol can have severe medical consequences.
The key point is to keep working with the person, the first day or so will be hard, but each hour that goes by, the person will gain more physical betterment. You will also observe a better emotional state. Remember, you are basically stopping the person from adding more poison to their system and, in exchange rebuilding the body’s natural defense system.
Sorry Physical State
This means that the person has most likely come to you in a pretty bad physical condition and an emotional mess; crying with despair, even hopelessness, etc. As you work with the person, they will go through different emotional stages from despair to pity to hope. Continue to help them, and you will see the person go through grief, fear, hostility, hate, anger, and on through a state of being interested and eventually into a calm, interested, and pleased state of mind. This change happens over many days, and emotions fluctuate from one to the next, but persist and don’t give up.
The End Result
When the person feels more alive again and somewhat healthier, this only means that the body has gotten rid of most of the poison and has patched up their body a bit. This is by no means the end and does not mean that all will be great from here on out. You and the recovering addict need to seek help now to continue their recovery, either with an addiction counselor, an outpatient rehabilitation program, or some similar help. Because the person is not now doing drugs or alcohol does not guarantee they won’t relapse. Most relapses occur because of wrong actions or incomplete ones, or the person didn’t get to the root of the problem. We can all improve something in ourselves every day.
