What is an Inpatient Program

Most addiction counsellors recommend inpatient programs for people with long-standing addiction problems. Specifically for those at risk because of medical complications.

Breaking free of a drug or alcohol addiction is one of the hardest things a person will ever do. But once the individual beats substance abuse, the mountain they climbed is quite an achievement.  Inpatient rehab centers are the best route for difficult cases that need special attention, medical or otherwise.

Residential or Inpatient – What’s the Difference

The inpatient drug rehab centers are residential drug rehabilitation centers that offer medical assistance with specialized monitoring and care. This service is not available in residential drug rehab centers. When a person has special medical needs or a physical condition that puts their life in danger, inpatient drug rehabilitation is advisable. In Canada, the distinction between inpatient and residential drug rehabilitation is not always specified. So we suggest asking the center if there is specialized medical care.

Inpatient Rehabs & Safe Environment

When a person is on a program and getting sober, they do not need the daily distractions of everyday living. In everyday living, one will most likely find the reason(s) why a person is using and is very much part of the problem in keeping sober. The inpatient rehab centers keep the person away from all potential distractions or issues that might create temptations and endanger their sobriety.

Emphasis on Self

A person with a substance addiction should have their attention on themselves. At the start of a program, they should not be dealing with problems. Having no pressure from neighbours, work, spouse and kids is essential in the first stages. In other words, the person is not influenced by their environment, which may trigger them to use their drug of choice.

In an inpatient program, the person is free of such surroundings or triggers. And able to move forwards once and for all. The ultimate goal of breaking free of addiction can begin with the help of qualified drug rehabilitation counsellors and specialists. They will tend to any needs the person might have to start their journey to sobriety.  A person experiences less stress in inpatient rehab centers because there are no outside influences to counteract what the person is doing for themselves.

Inpatient Rehab Centers & Confidentiality

A person needing help can take a leave of absence from work and not worry. Whether inpatient, outpatient, or detox, drug rehab centers will have confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements. Some centers offer the possibility of staying in touch with business associates once the person is well advanced in the program. Private areas on the premise are available to keep in touch when there is a need for it.

People who choose inpatient or residential centers have an added chance of successfully overcoming their addiction because of the reasons above.

Addiction: Not Easy to Overcome

Inpatient programs, however, can help a person do just that. Through therapy and support, education and perseverance, a person can walk out of an inpatient rehab center stronger and more optimistic.  If a person has a medical problem that renders his rehabilitation life-threatening and needs special care, an inpatient rehabilitation program is highly recommended.
